Who doesn’t love a neon dystopian music video?! Overall, we found that this was a great project to work on with Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation and their record label, Rocket Recordings. A fun project to complete, we produced the project during the summer of 2018 with a 4-person team.
To start, the band gave us each individual audio track, from kick drums to vocal harmonics, and this allowed us to precisely match the visuals with the music – everything you see is driven by the music.
Then, we animated everything in Cinema4D, linking everything to the audio tracks. Further, it has 3D, 2D, and hand-drawn elements all coming together to produce a wild video. Then, to add an extra layer of 80’s funk, we rendered it out in Octane using emissive textures.
Finally, a big thanks to Simon Russell who’s a guru with this technique. If you’re looking for a starting point on this technique, this video here gave us the nuts and bolts on how to produce this effect. Check out his amazing website here too.
Below, you can really see how the different elements of the music can drive the geometry in Cinema4D. Further, controlling the height and and frequency of the geometry points with the musical components looks ace; it would take a lot longer to produce the same effect when keyframing by hand.
